Antigone of Syria
Refugee women re-imagine Sophocles’ play about one woman’s rebellion against state and patriarchy.
We worked with 30 Syrian women in Lebanon to develop a new production of Sophocles’ 2500-year-old tragedy, interweaving their own stories with those of the ancients. The project culminated in a three-night run on Beirut’s biggest stage, and went on to tour Germany and France.
Taking place over three months of workshops in 2014, the production was a collaboration with Open Art Foundation.
"I lived this story. My brother was detained, taken away by the regime in Syria. I think he is dead and I want to bury him but I can't. I don't know where his body is. We need this.” - Muntaha, Antigone of Syria participant.
