Trustee Vacancies

Makani is seeking two new trustees to join our friendly, committed board of trustees.

Makani has been recently constituted as a charity, but previously operated as a community interest company. It has a great track record of impact for refugee women in the UK and in Lebanon and despite current challenges it continues to work effectively and with a strong strategic vision for the future.

Makani is a feminist and non-sectarian organisation that aims to empower refugee women to live lives of freedom, equality and dignity. We expect our trustees to share these values and help us to maintain a respectful and inclusive culture.

Trustees are expected to attend four meetings a year, one of which is an in-person day-long meeting at a weekend. Trustees are also occasionally expected to contribute to discussions between meetings where time-sensitive decisions are being made, these are usually conducted by email.

To apply for this role, you do not need to have been a trustee before, but you do need to demonstrate an understanding of our work and what it means to be a trustee for a small charity.

In order to complement existing skills on the board, we are currently looking particularly for a trustee with lived experience of migrating recently to the UK and for a trustee with strong understanding or experience in charity law. However, please feel free to apply if your skills are different from these and you feel that you could contribute to the board of Makani.

We are an equal opportunity organisation and welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds. If you feel that you would like to apply for this role but would need support or training to carry it out effectively, we would really like to hear from you and how we can support you.

We expect Makani trustees to contribute in all the following areas:

Governance and Strategy:

  • Ensure Makani operates in line with its charitable objectives and governing document;

  • Help to steer the overall strategic direction of the organisation and to evaluate how the strategy is working in practice;

  • Support effective governance and ensure appropriate policies, systems and controls are in place;

Support to Leadership:

  • Provide advice and constructive challenge to the Senior Leadership Team;

  • Act as an ambassador for Makani and its work where needed;

Risk and Compliance:

  • Help identify and mitigate organisational risk;

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements;

Shared values:

  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Support Makani’s vision and values and work with others in the organisation to put these into practice.
